Don’t Let “I Can’t” Stop You: Embracing Creativity and Overcoming Fear

Fear of trying and failing is the real enemy of creativity.
How often have you heard—or even said yourself—“I can’t even draw a straight line”? That phrase deserves a loud buzzer of rejection because it simply isn’t true!

Everyone has the potential to be creative when they erase the fear of failure. The truth is, there’s no such thing as failure—only opportunities to learn, grow, and see things in a new light.

Baby Steps Lead to Big Wins
In my creative process, I take baby steps. I practice, make mistakes, and embrace the idea of do-overs. More often than not, I end up discovering something unexpected and exciting along the way.

For example:
* Drawing: If I start a drawing and don’t like the direction it’s heading, I have options. I can throw it out and start fresh, or I can trace the parts I like and continue on a clean sheet of paper.

* Constructing a First Mock Pattern: After sketching an idea—whether it’s a piece of clothing or a handbag—the next step is making a prototype. This first version is where the magic happens. It’s not about mistakes; it’s about discovering what adjustments are needed for the fit, materials, and size. Each alteration is a step toward creating something better.

See the Magic, Not the Mistakes
The creative process isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. When you approach your projects with a mindset of curiosity and openness, every step, whether expected or not, becomes part of the magic.

Try and Try Again
The joy of creativity comes from the act of trying. It’s far more fulfilling to take a chance, experiment, and explore your ideas than to hold back out of fear. Remember: happier is the person who tries than the one who never starts.
